Sympathy For Devil chronicles the time when The Rolling Stones were at the peak of their creative powers and Jean-Luc Godard, a leading-force in the great French New Wave cinema continues his revolutionary political direction of filmmaking in this movie.

Possessing Godard's idiosyncratic style, this film can be seen as two movies in one.

The first layer of narrative features rock and roll superstars The Rolling Stones composing and creating their epic song Sympathy For The Devil in a London studio as they write material for their forthcoming Beggar's Banquet album.

In the second narrative, the movie presents a series of abstract fictional vignettes, as Godard probes topics as diverse as race, pornography and the irony of interviewing celebrities, which features a unique demonstration by Black Power revolutionaries and a TV interview with character Eve Democracy on the relationship between culture and revolution.

The film has gone on to become a modern-classic reflecting the political and social unrest of the late 1960’s as the love-in era began to dissipate.
