THE SMILE: FORGET EVERYTHING YOU KNEW...A CONCERT DEBUT IN LONDON

1 X 65' HD / 4k
DIRECTED BY PAUL DUGDALE
A DRIIFT PRODUCTION

Comprising Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Son Of Kemet’s Tom Skinner, The Smile embody a vision of a 21st century-Radiohead...but, a little set-back.

The Radiohead-pair remain unmistakable – Yorke’s remarkably undimmed falsetto and disaffected worldview in his lyrics; and Greenwood’s prodigious musicianship, remain – but The Smile dig deeper into Radiohead’s two-decade exploration and possibly fascination, of how electronics and guitars can co-exist, with jazz drummer, Tom Skinner providing a looser, freer, and warmer off-kilter groove to the complex song structures.

Directed by Paul Dugdale in a multi-camera shoot and performed in the round, with a seated audience and TV-studio-style set-up, the trio played three consecutive live shows within twenty-four hours at Magazine London, in the heart of London's Docklands, on January 29 and 30, 2022.

The Smile performed an impressive and captivating 65-minute set with slinky single The Smoke – with hints of German Krautrock pioneers CAN – and the mournful Speech Bubbles, the first of a few never-before-performed tracks. The band closed the main set with You Will Never Work in Television Again – a clattering schism of Pixies-esque, post-punk guitar noise before re-emerging with Just Eyes and Mouth.
